Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach, is reportedly attracting interest from a prominent European team, potentially posing a threat to Liverpool’s chance of securing him.
Since assuming the role at Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022, Alonso has excelled, earning recognition as one of Europe’s most promising young managers.
Upon his arrival, the German side was facing relegation, but Alonso swiftly turned their fortunes around. They are now strong contenders for the Bundesliga title.
Following their 3-0 triumph over reigning champions Bayern Munich on Saturday, Bayer Leverkusen, undefeated this season, extended their lead in the standings to five points.
According to Spanish outlet Nacional, Carlo Ancelotti’s contract extension with Real Madrid was somewhat surprising, given Alonso’s ascent.
However, Florentino Perez, the club’s president, remains keen on the Leverkusen manager. Reports indicate that Leverkusen has been requested to entertain negotiations with Real Madrid should Alonso depart before his contract expires in 2026, and Perez has reportedly initiated contact with Alonso to secure his future signing.
While Nacional’s report may offer some reassurance to Liverpool supporters, competition for Alonso’s services is expected, with Bayern Munich also rumored to be interested, especially if they part ways with Thomas Tuchel.
Whoever succeeds Jurgen Klopp at Anfield faces a daunting task. Meeting the club’s high standards and fan expectations without significant financial expenditure presents a significant challenge for any incoming manager.
